Toward a New Surface Transportation Economic ModelSecretary Mary Peters Our country is at a transportation policy crossroads. We have an amazing opportunity to come together and completely re-assess our approach to financing and managing surface transportation systems. For too long, we have tolerated exploding highway congestion, unsustainable revenue mechanisms and spending decisions based on political influence as opposed to merit. Statement from U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters: New York City Congestion Pricing Proposal"New York has engaged in one of the most vigorous and significant debates about transportation policy in modern U.S. history. While the announcement...(that the NY State Assembly will not take up the NYC congestion pricing proposal) is deeply disappointing, New York’s mounting traffic and environmental woes point to congestion pricing as an inevitable solution. We will engage with many of the largest cities in the US that have put forward ambitious traffic fighting plans to discuss how they could use (the $354.5 million that was originally set aside for NY) to cut traffic, improve transit and reduce pollution."
